About the Helmholtz Zentrum München
The Helmholtz Zentrum München is the German Research Center for Environmental Health. We investigate chronic diseases which develop from the interaction of environmental factors and individual genetic disposition.
The Helmholtz Zentrum München investigates complex diseases at the interface of health and the environment. We aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms in order to develop innovative diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. Thereby, we hope to make a major contribution to the quality of life of our society.
The medicine of the future will focus on approaches of prevention and causal therapy and, in the coming years, our center will concentrate specifically on chronic diseases. In addition, emphasis will be placed on systems biology, chemical biology, structural biology, science information processing and modern biophysical imaging methods. To achieve these objectives, we are prioritizing excellent basic research, experimental platforms which are used internationally, clinical cooperation groups and centers for translational medicine.
Our aim is to link basic research with clinical applications. As a national competence center, the Helmholtz Zentrum München will also continue to carry out duties in radiation research and radiation protection.
The objective is to prevent environmental diseases by providing knowledge-based recommendations to policy makers and society and to the individual citizen.
